IEA Hydro and the IEA Wind TCP meet jointly at Gaustablikk in Norway to discuss common research interests to accelerate the global energy trunaround. While wind and solar PV will provide the bulk electricity in the future they cannot be a stanalone technology. Flexibility and storage must be provided, preferably from renewable resources, to balance and stabilize the grid and limit curtailment. Hydropower is the only renewable resource able to cover all flexibility needs from sub-second to seasonal and interannual. Storage and pumped storage hydropower facilities are therefore becoming crucial enablers for higher levels of grid penetration by wind and solar PV.
