Description

The BEST packaged power station provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly method of extracting low head energy from rivers and streams where there is a drop of 2 to 8 metres to over distances to 100 metres, and 10 to 200 kilowatts is desired. The water turbine employing a fish-friendly runner is mounted horizontally in a turbine house complete with generator and controls with the turbine's intake facing downward toward a trash-rack system used to screen the incoming water.

Features & Advantages

  • The heat generated in the turbine house is directed to the trash-racks to keep them ice free in cold climates.
  • The trash racks are monitored by the control system to enable the vacuum to be broken so that the water in the turbine and intake will backwash the trash-racks removing the debris.
  • Air entrainment in the siphon loop is reduced as the turbine breaks up the air at the top of the siphon loop into small bubbles and distributes them in a rotating water column to be carried down and out the draft tube.
  • The horizontal turbine is dry and readily accessible to ease repair and maintenance.
  • Very little if any civil works are needed making the station easy to site and if the station is removed there is no scaring of the landscape.
  • The turbine rotates the incoming water stream without the use of stationary vanes which would interfere with the passage of fish. The water's energy is extracted under vacuum using a low velocity, low flow runner that allows passing fish to avoid collision with the runner blades.
  • Provision of strobe light and noise on the turbine intake can easily repel fish from the trash-rack area.
  • All mechanical components are in a visually attractive soundproofed housing.
  • No oil is used in the station. The turbine bearings are lubricated with environmentally friendly grease.
  • The horizontal trash-racks reduce the depth of head-pond needed to draw water into the turbine house.
