What is required to set up a small hydro installation?

The RETScreen Small Hydro Project Model can be used world-wide to easily evaluate the energy production, life-cycle costs and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) reduction for central-grid, isolated-grid and off-grid small hydro projects, ranging in size from multi-turbine small and mini hydro installations, to single-turbine micro hydro systems. It is available as a free download from The IEA Hydropower Small-Scale Hydro Annex website.
BC Hydro offers an interactive model for small and micro-hydro. It also has a free downloadable version of its Handbook for Developing Micro Hydro in British Columbia (pdf, 315kb), which describes issues that need to be considered when developing micro hydro projects, wherever they may be located, and which also apply to small hydro developments.
An Inventory of Undeveloped Opportunities at Potential Micro Hydro Sites in British Columbia (PDF, 509 Kb) is also available at no cost.
The U.S. Department of Energy Hydropower Program site, and the microhydropower.net site offer news, resources and downloads in relation to micro hydro development.
