Current Activities (2010 - 2015)
Annex IX:Hydropower Services
Objective
The overall objective of this Annex is to establish economic values for water and energy services provided by
storage hydro beyond beyond the production of electricity, such as
- Ancillary services to stabilise the electric grid Flood / drought protection
- Groundwater stabilisation Water quality improvements (oxygenation, temperature dispersion, trash removal)
- Navigation (transport) Irrigation (agriculture)
- Leisure and tourism
- Aquaculture
- Health
- Regional development
Tasks
The work will be divided into Tasks, including one focussing on the value of grid services and another to analyse services beyond the energy sector. These studies will not be cost-benefit analyses, but will be case studies used to validate economic assessment methods, quantifying the added value created by a specific hydropower scheme, in a given river basin, through its various multipurpose enabling functions.
Ancillary services to stabilise the electric grid
Flood / drought protection
Groundwater stabilisation
Water quality improvements (oxygenation, temperature dispersion, trash removal)
Navigation (transport)
Irrigation (agriculture)
Leisure and tourism
Means
Case studies based on recognized economic assessment methods. Joint initiative in collaboration with IEA/IHA/Eurelectric.
